Diving in Tenerife

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, has the perfect climate for staying active and playing sports, while the tropical waters of the Atlantic around Tenerife play host to all manner of divers; both local to Tenerife, and tourists alike.

Even though this island group belongs - geographically at least - to Africa, the Mediterranean-subtropical climate of the Canaries gives the weather a balmy spring-like quality all year round. The temperature of the water is very pleasant - 18 degrees in winter and 24 degrees Celsius in summer. As the temperature seldom varies, these waters are perfect for water activities, particularly diving. The Canary Islands offer diving courses to people of all abilities. It is recommended that beginners, and even experienced divers visit qualified diving schools, because the underwater landscape ofTenerife is like no other.

Thanks to Tenerife's volcanic formation, lava has formed archways out of basalt in “Coral Arch”. Dark tunnels, hidden caves, long ravines and amazing reefs are surrounded by impressive cliffs and rock landscapes. Diving is offered from 9 down to 60 metres under water, where incredible sea life can be discovered. The cost of diving courses vary between 125 to 350 euros, depending of the duration of the class. Courses for beginners, which start in a swimming pool and diving in the open water provide a good foundation for anybody interested in diving.

Diving will be an exceptional experience on Tenerife. Diving to wrecked ships on the seabed, like the sunken sailing yacht El Meridian is a fascinating experience for divers. Likewise, El Condesito, which lies in Las Galletas and can be found during diving trips. Underwater caves, like Cueva de Palm Mar or Cueva de Ali Baba are also well worth visiting while under the waves. Dives like Los Chuschos, where divers can feed rays, or Los Escalones, which leads to black corals and has plenty of angelfish, trumpetfish and octopuses to see. Diving in Tenerife is a stunning, exciting and memorable experience.
