Beaches in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca’s coast is made up of three main bays, namely Playa Dorada on the east, Playa Flamingo on the west and Playa Blanca being wedged in the middle. Located on the east however, lay the Papagayo beaches, one of the best on the island.

Playa Blanca beach

Translated as “white beach”, this is the town beach of Playa Blanca. Given its accessibility and small size, the beach does often get crowded. Should this happens, need not worry. The bigger beach, Playa Dorada, is just a short walk away on a pleasant promenade, east of Playa Blanca.

Playa Dorada beach

Located on the east of Playa Blanca beach is Playa Dorada, literally translated as the golden beach. The two beaches are connected by the Avenida Maritima promenade which is a pleasant 10 minutes stroll away. Playa Dorada is the biggest of the three main beaches and is sheltered by wave barriers from both side. There are sun lounges for rent many water activities on offer such as banana boats, jet skis and parascending. With shops, cafes, big resorts nearby, this beach is very popular amongst tourists

Playa Flamingo beach

Playa Flamingo is located on the west of Playa Blanca, just past Punta Limones. Although slightly out of town centre, there are shops and cafes along it for your convenience, and the area is developing. There are a number of small sandy coves along the west of Playa Flamingo, but with less facilities.

Papagayo beaches

The best beaches of the Playa Blanca area, and arguably of the island, would have to be the beaches of Papagayo. Forming part of the Papagayo Natural Park, you can access the beaches on dirt track and there will be a small entrance fee to pay. It is reachable by car but do make sure it is not part of the “non-allowed” places imposed by some of the rental car companies. Given its remoteness, facilities are limited and slightly pricey.
