Description:

The scenic Artenara hiking route starts from Cruz de Tejeda where your route specialist takes you along the border of the Caldera de Tejeda crater. Feast your eyes on the stunning surrounding mountains of Gran Canaria, the valleys and the natural monuments especially on the west side.

As we continue, we leave behind the emblematic Roque Nublo and venture towards Roque Bentaiga and the Acusa valley. We will take a quick stop to visit Cuevas Caballero – a Canariis settlement where you will be shared stories and facts on how they used to live on the island.

From here, the scene of the Artenara hike changes as we venture into a pine forest and we will follow a trail which in the past was used for migrating animals in search for lusher grasslands to feed. Depending on the weather, this walk can give you a good view of the highest mountain in Spain - the Mount Teide - from the neighbouring island of Tenerife. If not, sea of clouds can be seen hovering the area, creating the mystic feeling.

The last leg of the hike will be to visit the highest village of Gran Canaria - Artenara. Artenara is home to an impressive church, the sculpture of the Spanish philosopher (Miguel de Unamuno), and the sanctuary of the “Virgen de la Cuevita”. Finally, we will visit the Cave-Museum of Artenara where we can see traces of how the ancient inhabitants of the village one lived and in this place.
