Travel Inspirations - Playa de las Americas
Located in the south of Tenerife island, Playa de las Américas is the resort town of incredible restaurants, endless beaches and a list of activities which stretches just as long. With the eternal spring climate of Tenerife , Playa de las Américas is the year round playground for the holidaymakers. In Playa de las Américas you can relax until your heart is content by laying on one of the white sand beaches or by the pool of one of a thousand resorts. For active individuals, why not take part in the various water activities on offer, dive amongst the underwater marine life, or hire a bicycle and discover all Playa de las Américas has to offer? Playa de las Américas is famous for its lively atmosphere and it has numerous nightclubs which are sure to get you in the mood for partying. It has an great selection of swanky cocktail lounges and bars, each with their own signatures and themes. Playa de las Américas offers everything from unique cocktails in Harry’s Bar to a wild night out at one of Veronica’s Strip’s bars. Playa de la Américas has experiences to offer everyone, be it a couple on a honeymoon or a family in need of time away. You will not have to go far if you are looking for a break away from the Las Américas lifestyle - beautiful Fañabé and Arona are close by, along with Los Cristianos where you can catch a ferry to visit the neighbouring Canary Island of La Gomera . History The making of Playa de las Américas... Unlike many cities in the Canary Islands , Playa de las Américas was built and designed specifically as a tourist resort. Its year round sunshine and warm climate made it an ideal resort destination and people were quick to capitalise on it after the realisation in the 1960s. It wasn’t just the construction of the tourist attractions that took place when the resort was built, but it was also basic infrastructure such as water pipes and desolation plants that were installed. Even the beach was created from scratch, with golden sand imported from the Sahara desert. The majority of Playa de las Américas has been developed over the past 30 years and the complexity of the engineering and the speed of which it was built has made it a great achievement in Spanish economic history. Built as little time ago in the 1960s, Playa de las Américas is located next to the town of Los Cristianos and stretches northward towards Costa Adeje . The towns of Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos are now joined due to the excessive expansion, where once there was a desert between the two. Security around the club scene The main cause for concern in Playa de las Américas was of course, drug pushing. A big controversy linked to Playa de las Américas was that of security around the clubbing scene. In the 1960’s, when the resort was first born, security was known to be very poor; typically around the `Veronica’s Strip`. The Spanish Government spent ten years regenerating the area and increasing security and Playa de las Américas was granted CCTV, pedestrian friendly streets and extra sources of protection to ensure the painted orange lines belonging to the drug pushers were unused. Veronica’s Strip is no longer a place to fear. Culture The first ever building erected in Playa de las Américas was a resort hotel in the 1960’s. Prior to this construction there wasn’t any township or villages in the area. Hence, there isn’t any culture to be expected here – only the imported culture of the area´s main visitors, the English and the Germans, exists now, with a good dose of the Spanish language to even it up. It is a melting pot of visitors and Canarians here, and many visitors enjoy the comforts of home that this culture brings with it. So many people speak English it is hard to find a Spanish person who doesn´t. The perception of Playa de las Américas is of an artificial, fabricated resort, but it still brings over a million of international visitors and beach-loving locals every year. Economy The main industries in Playa de las Américas are based around tourism. These industries are hotel, restaurants, entertainment (including promotional and clubs), tour/ excursions and retail. Playa de las Américas has a fruit and vegetable plantation located in San Eugenio where farmers grow avocados, tomatoes and their signature fruit- bananas. The plantation is visible to the public who are taking one of the Caldera de Ray horse or donkey treks. How to get there By Bus: Many TITSA buses run to Playa de las Américas regularly, particularly from major cities. For example: Bus number 343 runs from Puerto de la Cruz via El Botanico, Airport North, Airport South, Los Cristianos then through to Playa de las Américas. In fact, Bus 340 and 343 are good buses to catch if you are flying into Tenerife South and staying at Puerto de la Cruz . It is also possible to catch the 110 and 111 from Santa Cruz, and the 416, 417 and 473 from Adeje . You can pick up a TITSA bus timetable from many bus stations, hotels and outlets. The bus timetable is very easy to follow, as are the connections if you need to take several buses. Bono bus card: If you are travelling to and around Playa de las Américas often, it is worth investing in a Bono bus card. The bus cards cost just €12 and are available from most bus stations and outlets which present the green TITSA/BONO sign. It is considerably cheaper to travel with a BONO bus card than paying for individual fares. When boarding the bus, you simply inform the driver the city you are going, and enter the card into a machine next to the bus driver. The machine will stamp your journey details onto the card and hand it back to you. You can use the Bono card for as many journeys as the 12€ allowance will stretch to, and you can use the Bono card for more than one passenger. By Car: For drivers, the main Tenerife motorway TF-1 takes you directly into the heart of Playa de las Américas.

Playa de las Américas is most famous for its range of pretty beaches. You will not be disappointed when you wriggle your toes into the imported Sahara sand and lay your eyes on the unique tiger print effect that this collection of sand creates. Playa de Troya I and II (also known as Playa de las Américas I and II) Playa de Troya I and II are two beaches located in the centre of Playa de las Américas’ promenade. These beaches are awarded the ‘blue flag’ in 1998 for complying with the European Environmental Education Foundation (FEE) regulations. With a backdrop of mountains towering up from behind, the beaches are dotted with fanned palms; tiger print sand and many Tahitian style umbrellas.
