Travel Inspirations - El Médano
Overview El Médano literally translates into English as ‘the sand dune’ and here you will find no shortage of glorious sands. Considered the ‘coolest’ resort in Tenerife it is located just 12 kilometres from Reina Sofia airport. The strong winds make it a popular spot with wind surfers. The resort has been the proud host of many a wind/kite surfing championship. The landscape combines a mesmerising view of Mountain Roja (the red mountain) with a vast stretch of golden sand perfect for sunbathing. It is a protected area due to its ecological significance. This bohemian paradise offers a sun bleached boardwalk and a selection of cafes, restaurants and bars. The atmosphere is open minded, relaxed and very friendly. History The town is home to an important site of historical and religious interest. A cave in the town was for a period frequented by Peter of Saint Joseph Bentacur, more commonly known as Hermano Pedro. A shepherd in the highlands of Vilaflor until the age of twenty four; he enjoyed recuperating in this secluded resting spot, located just by La Tejita beach. Hermano Pedro was a devoutly religious man. Although he very much wanted to be a priest, he struggled to understand the theological material and was forced to withdraw from the seminary. He became a Franciscan tertiary in the convent of Costa Rica in Guatemala. During his life he visited many schools and hospitals tending to the vulnerable and afflicted. Eventually he opened a hospital for the convalescent poor. He wrote up a new rule based on prayer, penance, fasting and generosity. Having once found shelter in a little cave here, this humble and religious man would go on to give shelter to thousands of poverty stricken people. Hermano Pedro was beatified on June 22 nd 1980 and canonized the same year on July 30 th , by Pope John Paul II. He is accredited by the Pope as being the first Canarian and Guatemalan saint. Culture El Médano is an open minded and laid back resort favoured by surf enthusiasts from across the world. It is also home to workers in the nearby resorts of Playa Las Americas and Los Cristianos . Economy The economy of El Médano is driven mainly by the influx of surfer tourists. There are a variety of windsurfing schools in the area including the renowned Official Test Centre and Surf Centre Playa. The area is also agriculturally rich, producing a variety of fruit and vegetables such as potatoes as well as grapes which are made into fine local wine. How to get there By Bus: There are two TITSA buses stopping at El Médano. The 470 departs from Los Cristianos several times a day, on the hour. On the West coast take the 116 from Santa Cruz which departs every two hours. By Car: If travelling by car from Santa Cruz (north), take the main motorway TF-1 which runs along the east coast followed by TF-64. This journey should take around 45 minutes. Similarly, motorway TF-1 is the fastest route to El Médano from the south.
The Cave of Hermano Pedro In the cave of Hermano Pedro, you will find a tranquil spot for reflection. There is a statue of the Saint and a variety of offerings including many beautiful paintings and exotic flowers. These are left by the many thousands of pilgrims who visit the shrine every year. There is a sign pointing towards the cave located near La Tejita beach. La Montaña Roja On the skyline you can view La Montana Roja (The Red Mountain). This mesmerising volcanic cone rises above the sea facing Los Abrigos. A number of rare plants can be found in the surrounds, perfect if you are a keen botanist. The peculiar greyish stems of ceropegia fusca are a unique and interesting sight. The Euphorbia Paralias is another interesting find. It is feasted on by the colourful caterpillar of the Spurge Hawk moth (Hyles Euphorbia). The area is also popular with UFO spotters; numerous sightings of strange crafts have been reported here. Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias Situated opposite the El Médano is the Plaza de Principe de Asturia. In this main plaza you will find a large children’s playground to keep the little ones entertained. They can expend some of that excess energy on the monkey bars whilst you enjoy an ice-cream under the shade of a leafy palm tree.
Wind and kitesurfing El Médano is the perfect spot for wind and kitesurfers. The peak surfing time is June to September. The three main spots are the bay, the harbour wall and the Cabezo beach. If you are an intermediate, the South Bay is the best spot. If you are more experienced, make your way to the North Bay for more challenging waves! There are many aspects of El Médano which make it the ideal surfers' paradise, the top reason being predictable trade winds rather than thermal ones. The climate is temperate with magnificent summer temperatures of 28° C and lows of 19°C in the winter. The resort is perfectly located just ten minutes from Reina Sofia airport in the south of Tenerife . Hiking and mountain biking The uncluttered mountain range of Mountain Roja, is perfect for mountain biking and hiking. Mountain bike hire and trail maps are available in the resort. This stretch of sandy beach is popular with families, with a hive of activities. It is just a few steps away from the Plaza de Principe de Asturia, which boasts a variety of cafes and a large children’s play park. Playa La Tejita Playa La Tejita is located beyond the sand dunes towards Mountain Roja. On the far side, one cove is a nudist beach but if you continue along you will reach a stretch of relatively uncluttered white sand. This section of the sand benefits from a small beach bar, where you can enjoy a cool beer and soak up some rays. Playa La Pelada If you head toward the most eastern beach, you will find Playa La Pelada. Access to this nudist beach is slightly more difficult than Playa La Tejita.
